How do you feel when you give up on a goal or a dream? If you’re anything like me, you’ve given up more times than you’d care to admit. How do you feel when you refuse to give up? I feel empowered! I’ll bet you do too. So I wonder, why do we ever give up when we know how great it feels to push through?
When I have given up, fear has been the root cause. “Fear”, boy, am I getting sick of this word. It just seems to keep coming up all the time. Do you feel this way too? Think about when you were a little kid. Were you afraid of anything? Not likely. We have learned to fear. The sad truth is that most of us were better at learning to fear than just about anything else.
How often does fear actually do us any good? Certainly there are times when we should be cautious (when physical danger is looming of course), but overall, we miss out on a lot of wonderful opportunities and accomplishments because of misplaced fear.
I love the acronym for fear: false evidence appearing real. It’s so simple and true. When I first heard this about nine months ago I thought “Wow! If I had known this 30 years ago, my life would be so different right now.” I decided then to challenge myself every day to live fearless and faithful. It’s not easy. Sometimes I don’t even realize I’m afraid of something until I hear myself say it out loud. But that’s ok. Life is a journey. We don’t have to be perfect. We just have to keep trying. The rewards are too great to give up!
